Silverstone Auctions’ best ever collection of competition cars at Race Retro

The 2018 Race Retro Competition Car Sale on Friday 23rd February will see the finest selection of competition cars ever assembled by Silverstone Auctions being offered for sale.

Headlining the auction at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire is the record-breaking 1990 BTCC championship winning car driven by Robb Gravett, ex-Radio 1 Breakfast show DJ, the late Mike Smith and ex-World Rally Champion, Stig Blomqvist.

It is the first time that the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 ‘Group A’, which dominated the 1990 season with nine wins, eight pole positions and eight fastest laps, has been publicly offered for sale. This important piece of BTCC history is expected to sell for between £175,000 and £220,000.

Another formidable touring car being offered is the 1997 Nissan Primera Super Tourer driven by the late David Leslie, which is now eligible for the Super Touring Car Championship, estimated at £80,000 to £100,000. It comes complete with a very extensive spares package, worth in the region of £40,000.

Meanwhile, the ex-Anthony Reid 1999 Ford Mondeo Super Tourer, which was his drive for the last three rounds of that year’s BTCC championship, is also on offer. Estimated at £70,000 to £80,000, this exceptional Prodrive-built Mondeo also presents a great opportunity to compete at a very high standard.

Other stunning race cars going under the hammer include a 1970 Ford Escort Mk.1 RS1600 FIA race car from the home of well-respected British saloon car driver Vince Woodman, estimated at £85,000 to £100,000, and a completely restored 1975 Lola T360 F2 fitted with a new 2-litre Cosworth BDG engine, estimated at £60,000 to £70,000, both offering a fantastic racing future.

Rally cars will also be taking centre stage and none more so than a 1999 Ford Focus WRC that competed in 11 rounds of the World Rally Championship, four with the legendary ex-World Rally Champion Colin McRae behind the wheel at the Rally Catalunya, Rally Tour De Corse, plus the Rally Acropolis and Rally China.

Other famous drivers of chassis #68335, estimated at £120,000 to £140,000, include ex-World Rally Champion Petter Solberg and Thomas Radstrom.

A further piece of WRC history being offered for sale by Silverstone Auctions at Race Retro is a 1993 Subaru Legacy RS Group A ex-Prodrive rally car driven by ex-World Rally Champion, the late Richard Burns and ex-World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen.

This formidable machine led the 1993 Acropolis Rally in the hands of Vatanen, while Burns gained a second-place finish at the 1995 Bettega Memorial Rallysprint in Italy. It is estimated between £120,000 and £140,000.

Nick Whale, managing director at Silverstone Auctions, said: “Our Race Retro Competition Car Sale is simply stunning and undoubtedly our best ever collection of race and rally cars. It presents a great opportunity to own a competitive car and compete at the very highest level."

Indeed, driven in period, some of these cars are associated with some of the most famous names in motorsport. From McRae to Burns to Vatanen, the list goes on!
