Erik Comas Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’ headlines Iconic Auctioneers’ sale of '80s race and rally cars at Race Retro

Iconic Auctioneers will present one of the most significant French touring cars of the 1980s at its Iconic Sale for Competition Cars at Race Retro, with the ex-Erik Comas Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’ taking centre stage. The car, driven by Comas to clinch the 1987 French Supertouring Championship at Pau-Arno, leads a carefully curated group of ‘80s race and rally cars offered at the Stoneleigh Park sale on 20 February.

Before his Formula 1 debut in 1991 and a four-year Grand Prix career that earned him cult hero status, Erik Comas had a brief but successful stint in touring cars. This Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’, chassis Ch 3-86, is the exact car used in his title-clinching drive on 25 October 1987. Offered with an estimate of £200,000 to £250,000, it stands as one of only three factory-built ‘Superproduction’ versions ever produced.

Renault’s determination to secure outright success in the 1987 season led to extensive development of three selected cars from an original group of six. Roll cages by Matter, chassis development by Sonica and a heavily reworked Sodemo Moteurs engine transformed the Renault 5 Turbo into a formidable touring car. Producing around 410bhp and finished in its period Philips blue and red livery, this example represents the peak of Renault’s Supertouring programme and carries confirmed factory provenance.

Recently demonstrated in public, including a run at Silverstone’s Secret Meet, the Erik Comas Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’ remains both historically important and mechanically capable. It offers collectors the rare chance to acquire a championship-winning touring car from a formative period in European tin-top racing.

Alongside it is a 1984 Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, chassis EXI 1465, offered with an estimate of £175,000 to £200,000. Closely associated with British driver John Price, this is the only genuine works Maxi Turbo privately campaigned in the UK during the Group B era. Developed from one of just 20 works cars, it competed successfully in period and retains a well-documented history, making it a cornerstone of the British Maxi Turbo story.

Also consigned is a 1987 DAM 4100 Metro 6R4, estimated at £100,000 to £120,000. Built by David Appleby following his work with Austin Rover Motorsport and informed by the experience of Tony Pond, the DAM 4100 represents an evolved take on the 6R4 concept. Based on a Clubman chassis, it blends Group B DNA with thoughtful engineering updates and has enjoyed competition success and careful long-term maintenance.

Rob Hubbard, Managing Director and Principal Auctioneer at Iconic Auctioneers, said: “Race Retro is the natural home for cars like these. The Erik Comas Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’ is a landmark touring car, and to offer it alongside a Maxi Turbo linked to John Price and a Metro 6R4 born from Tony Pond’s era speaks to the depth of this sale. It underlines our role as specialists in competition cars at every level of the market.”

Bidding is open to registered buyers, with pre-registration encouraged ahead of the sale. The Iconic Sale for Competition Cars will take place on 20 February 2026 at Race Retro, with live and online bidding available.
